Answers to common questions about the program, enrollment, and logistics.
Lit C.R.E.W. stands for Connect. Read to Research. Explore. Wrap Up. It’s a literacy program designed to engage students in project-based learning, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
The program is tailored for students in afterschool settings and their educators. It focuses on building literacy skills through interactive and innovative methods that align with students’ interests.
- Connect: Building connections between students, texts, and real-world contexts.
- Read to Research: Developing research and literacy skills by diving deeply into texts.
- Explore: Illustrating their understanding of the text through a project-based approach.
- Wrap Up: Consolidating learning, reflecting on projects, and sharing insights with peers.
Lit C.R.E.W. provides educators with training, resources, and ongoing support, including regular check-ins, formal meetings, and site observations. Educators are equipped with strategies for facilitating student-led, project-based learning experiences.
Educators participate in an orientation session at the start of the program and receive guidance on project-based learning, literacy strategies, and the Lit C.R.E.W. framework. Ongoing professional development is also provided throughout the year.
Progress is evaluated through two formal site observations and three formal meetings (beginning, middle, and end of the year). Feedback and constructive suggestions are shared to help educators refine their approach.
Lit C.R.E.W. helps students improve literacy skills, build confidence in research and presentation, develop critical thinking, and engage with their peers in meaningful ways.
The program emphasizes student ownership by allowing them to choose project topics, collaborate in teams, and present their findings or creations. Educators act as facilitators, guiding students while empowering them to lead.
Students work on projects inspired by the texts they read. These can range from research-based presentations and creative writing to performances and community-based initiatives, depending on their interests and the curriculum focus.
