When Afterschool Leaders Come Together, Young People Thrive

At ExpandED Schools, we are fortunate to support a wide range of afterschool programs throughout New York City. Some are large, multi-site nonprofits, while others are smaller, grassroots organizations rooted in their communities. Despite their size, they all share one mission: creating spaces where young people can learn, grow, and thrive.

Last month, 61 afterschool site leaders—representing every corner of the five boroughs—joined us for our quarterly Directors Convening, the first in 2025. These gatherings act as think tanks for afterschool leaders, a rare chance for directors and site managers to connect, trade insights, and work through both successes and challenges. This year’s focus is sustaining momentum—things like how to set and track SMART goals, turn stakeholders into allies, and expand program reach to serve more young people.

Running an afterschool program is not easy. Afterschool directors juggle daily challenges—scrambling for funding, hiring and keeping staff, crafting curriculum, and supporting children and families. These convenings give leaders room to step back, learn about promising practices from their colleagues, sharpen strategies,  and hone in on how they lead.

For programs to succeed, directors need clear goals and a fresh approach  to support their programming through partnership to meet young people’s needs. When families and communities lean in, young people feel supported—not just served. And when programs partner with elected officials, nonprofits, and city agencies, that’s when doors open to resources and funding. Put it all together, and you get deeper, more meaningful experiences for the young people who need them most.

This isn’t just about the hours after school. It’s about creating opportunities for young people to succeed—in the classroom and far beyond. And, these convenings are a practical, powerful part of that work.

To the site directors who joined us: Your leadership and partnership are key in shaping opportunities for young people citywide. The insights you bring to the table directly inform how we collectively drive impact in the months ahead.

Our next Directors Convening is a virtual meeting on March 18. If you’re interested in youth development or afterschool programs, please reach out.
