Comic books have a powerful potential to help English language learners (ELLs) become more adept at reading and writing in English, and more engaged in books and reading in general. This workshop brings together Dr. Bitz and Dr. Leathers, who have worked together in numerous literacy-based environments, to present a workshop focused on the process and results of comics created by ELLs. The workshop establishes guidelines and a framework for working with ELLs, and the presenters introduce skills and strategies for helping youths to plan, write, design, and publish original comic books with a focus on English acquisition. The workshop will provide participants with no-cost, web-based resources that can help them lead their own comic book clubs with additional supports for English language learners.
