New York, NY, September 20, 2022 – ExpandED Schools, a New York City nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that all kids have opportunities to discover their talents and develop their full potential, announced today that Daniele Baierlein, a seasoned leader with expertise in public-private partnerships, has been named Chief Advancement Officer, effective August 29, 2022. Rashida Ladner-Seward was appointed Chief Program Officer effective July 1, 2022.
With over 20 years of fundraising, policy, and partnership-building experience in New York, Washington, DC, and across the country, Baierlein is an expert in building stronger systems that ensure that every young person can thrive. Prior to joining ExpandED, she served as Executive Director of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City where she raised more than $70 million to support New Yorkers during the pandemic and led the effort to foster public-private partnerships between City agencies, the private sector, and the philanthropic community. She will be managing the development, policy and communications teams, helping unite public and private fundraising efforts across the organization and creating a unified communications effort. “I am thrilled to join ExpandED Schools and build on the impactful programs they have developed over the past 24 years. As New York recovers from the pandemic, it is more important to ensure that all young people in New York City have access to enriching afterschool programs that affirm their identities, teach them valuable skills, and spark new possibilities in and out of the school day,” said Daniele Baierlein.
In addition, Rashida Ladner-Seward was promoted to Chief Programs Officer at ExpandED Schools. Ladner-Seward, who has been with ExpandED for 15 years, with extensive experience leading afterschool programs directly before coming to ExpandED, will be charged with leading all programmatic efforts to further the organization’s mission, build strong afterschool programs, partner with city agencies, and nurture high-impact school-community partnerships. “I am honored and excited to unite and advance ExpandED’s core program areas of K-8 enrichment, work-based learning, and educator development. My trajectory into the youth services world began in high school when I was a peer leader working on a range of public health issues as a member of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council while studying music at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. My high school experiences cemented my belief that youth participation in enrichment activities build confidence and self-esteem while helping them to succeed academically. I know that children’s joy and talent are the life force of a healthy society, and this is what ExpandED seeks to grow. It is an awesome responsibility, in all senses of the word,” said Rashida Ladner-Seward.

Founded as The After-School Corporation (TASC) in 1998 through a challenge grant from the Open Society Foundations (then the Open Society Institute), ExpandED Schools was the first organization established to build a citywide system of daily comprehensive after-school programs for children and youth in kindergarten through high school. ExpandED Schools laid the foundation for New York City to construct the nation’s largest publicly funded K-12 after-school system. In this process, ExpandED Schools also helped develop program standards for the U.S. Department of Education. The enduring goal of ExpandED Schools has been to ensure that all children have opportunities to discover their talents and develop their full potential through public education.

About Daniele Baierlein
Daniele serves as Chief Advancement Officer, managing development, policy, and communications. Prior to joining ExpandED, she served as Executive Director of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City where she raised more than $70 million to support New Yorkers during the pandemic and led the effort to foster public-private partnerships between City agencies, the private sector, and the philanthropic community. With over 20 years of fundraising, policy, and partnership-building experience in New York, Washington, and across the country, she is an expert in building stronger systems that ensure that every young person can thrive. She has a bachelor’s in environmental conservation and political science from the University of New Hampshire. While working full time, Daniele earned a Juris Doctor at the Catholic University of America School of Law. She has been named to City & State’s New York City 40 Under 40 and serves on the board and leads the annual conference planning for Hugh O’Brien Youth Foundation’s NY Metro chapter, a global community of youth volunteers who are dedicated to leadership and service.
About Rashida Ladner-Seward
Rashida Ladner-Seward has worked in the nonprofit youth services sector for over 20 years. Prior to joining ExpandED Schools, Rashida worked for New York City’s Police Athletic League (PAL) managing and directing a range of youth-serving programs, including SYEP, In-School Youth (now Learn & Earn), and one of PAL’s first K-5 school-based afterschool programs under DYCD’s OST initiative (now COMPASS). Rashida currently serves on the board of directors for the New York State Network for Youth Success, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a youth-serving system that increases the quality and availability of afterschool and expanded learning programs. Rashida is also actively involved in the nonprofit arts sector, having served on the Arts Education Panel for the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), and as a member of the Future Culture Working Group an initiative led by The Design Trust for Public Space, in partnership with Staten Island Arts, which aimed to create a cultural plan to enhance equitable neighborhood development and test design and programming strategies through public art pilots. Rashida has a B.A. from New York University, is an alumna of the PASE-Baruch College School of Public Affairs’ Emerging Leaders in Nonprofit Management Program, and the New York Community Trust Leadership Fellows.
