One in a Million: Middle School Is the Next Level
We’re reaching our 1 millionth student this school year! This blog is part of a series where we journey throughout our expanded learning schools network and get to know some of our students. Meet Joseph, a 6th grader in the Bronx. He’s 1 in a million!
“My favorite subject is social studies. I like to learn about history and what other people have done to make greatness in the world. You look at a map and you hear stories about how people changed the city.
Everyone uses the word ‘smart’ to describe themselves, but I’d say I’m smart. I’m also focused and independent, and someone who really cares about what happens around the world. In this country, there are a lot of things going on; we have to fix the problems. I watch the news almost every day, but I don’t like it, because you get information – like if you’re in a car on a road trip and you hear about a truck swerving – and it gives you bad moments of what can happen.
My best advice to someone not yet in middle school is this: in elementary school you play around, but in middle school, you take it to another level. Since you’re going to a new experience, think about what you can do and how you should act. We can laugh around, but not constantly.”
